Rails' Tails: The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the nation's first, is a hallowed name in railroad history, and for over a century, one of the three largest Eastern rail systems. This book is a collection of some of the experiences of the company's former managers from a wide variety of functions and responsibilities--essentially an oral history of the railroad during the second half of the 20th century. Some are funny, some sad, but all are informative, telling about the people, places, and things that made up the railroad managers' world in this period. The value of these stories is already increasing as many of the authors are now deceased. Unfortunately, what was not recorded in some fashion is lost forever or to be told by someone else who was not the first hand witness of the tale.
Rails' Tails provides a fascinating collection of vignettes, covering aspects of business, labor and social history of one of America's historic railroads, the Baltimore & Ohio. This book brings to life the "people" component of this once great "fallen flag" road. -Roger Grant, Kathryn and Calhoun Lemon Professor of History, Clemson University
