Joshua Johnson: Freeman and Early American Portrait Painter
Joshua Johnson, the first documented African American portrait painter was active between 1794 and 1824. Published on the occasion of an exhibition organized jointly by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center of Colonial Williamsburg and Maryland Historical Society, this book focuses on his life and paintings and includes a supplemental catalog of other artists' works related to Johnson's, including works by members of the Peale family.
