Do You Remember? The Whimsical Letters of H. L. Mencken and Philip Goodman (Deluxe Edition)
In 1918, while editing The Smart Set in New York and working on The American Language in his native Baltimore, Mencken's best friend, Philip Goodman, a New York advertiser and publisher, wrote a letter "reminiscing" about their German-American neighborhood of 1880s and 1890s. His invented characters and events and obvious affection for those times challenged Mencken; who responded in a similar vein. Sanders has reconstructed and annotated the correspondents’ three year efforts to out-do each other in telling tall stories.
